The standard drink

Labelling

ABV stands for ‘alcohol by volume.’

The ABV % is how much of the liquid in the bottle is pure alcohol.

330ml at 4% ABV = 13ml of pure alcohol
13ml = 10g
10g = a standard drink!

Volume Up

As the ABV % of your beverage choice goes up, the volume of a standard drink comes down.

13% ABV wine = 100ml standard drink
40% ABV spirit = 30ml standard drink

You’re in a bar and you order a round of drinks for your friends. Whose drink has the most alcohol in it?

  1. 1 standard drink
  2. 1.7 standard drinks
  3. 2 standard drinks
  4. 1.4 standard drinks

That’s right, the higher the ABV the lower the volume of a standard drink, so the 60ml 40% ABV double bourbon has the most alcohol in it.

The higher the ABV the lower the volume of a standard drink, so the 60ml 40% ABV double bourbon has the most alcohol in it.

So, get to know what a standard drink is for your tipple of choice. A night on the town drinking large glasses of wine will feel totally different than if you stick to standard drinks all night!

Let’s find out why…

Narrator Narrator

The average person processes just
10g of alcohol per hour.

Standard drink
Wine bottle
750ml bottle of 13% wine

If you meet a friend for a drink at 5.30 and you have a 150ml 13% ABV glass of wine before heading home, what time will it be before that drink is out of your system?

  1. 6pm
  2. 6:30pm
  3. 7pm
  4. 7:30pm

The average person can only process one standard drink an hour. In this scenario you had 1.5 standard drinks, which means one and a half hours of processing time, so the job won’t be done until 7pm.

Pouring Interactive

Now you know why standard drinks are important, let’s see if you can pour yourself one.

Let’s start with spirits. Drag the slider on the right of the image to fill the glass to where you think a standard drink is.

Interesting isn’t it? It’s important to be able to recognise how much a standard drink is, especially when you’re pouring your own spirits.

Pouring Interactive

Ok, now let’s see you pour a standard drink of 4% beer. Drag the slider on the right of the image to fill the glass to where you think a standard drink is.

So, that’s what a standard drink of beer looks like in a glass. If you usually drink beer from a bottle you can check the label to see how many standards are inside.

Pouring Interactive

Finally, let’s see you pour a standard drink of wine that is 13% alcohol. Drag the slider on the right of the image to fill the glass to where you think a standard drink is.

Wine is often poured in large glasses, which makes it really easy to over pour and unwittingly end up having more standard drinks than you planned. It’s good to know what 100mls actually looks like in a glass.

All beers are brewed equal.

Standard Drinks

It’s handy to know that a standard brown bottle beer at 4% is a perfect standard drink.

But premium and European lagers are actually 5%, meaning a single bottle is 1.3 standard drinks.

And if you like craft brews, they’re more likely to be 6 or 7% meaning a single 330ml serve will be between 1.6 and 1.8 standard drinks!
